Linseed is a traditional oilseed crop in China, but it was unknown in the deep mountains until its value was recognized. Linseed can be divided into oil-using linseed, oil-and-fiber-using linseed, and fiber-using linseed. Linseed grown in Northeast China is used for textiles, such as the commonly seen linen mats or linen clothing. Oil-using linseed is mainly produced in the western and northwestern parts of Inner Mongolia, Shanxi's northwestern region, and Gansu's Huining county, where the local linseed oil is also known as huamao oil. This is because it was introduced to China by the Han Dynasty envoy Zhang Qian during the ancient times. Traditional Chinese medicine research indicates that linseed grown in the high-cold area of Huitengxi in Inner Mongolia is better. Linseed is mainly distributed in temperate zones, and the oil content of linseed seeds ranges from 40% to 60%. What sets linseed oil apart from other edible oils is that its main fatty acid is linolenic acid, which accounts for about 50%. The temperature in the growing area of linseed affects the fatty acid composition of linseed oil to a great extent. Linseed oil produced in cold areas generally has a higher degree of unsaturation, while linseed oil produced in warm areas has a lower degree of unsaturation. Linseed oil contains rich alpha-linolenic acid, which is a good way to supplement alpha-linolenic acid.
